The 2026/27 SportPesa Premier League season is set to kick off on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as football authorities move to accommodate the demanding calendar leading up to the historic 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Sources indicate that the new campaign will operate under a compressed schedule, with league organizers keen to ensure the season concludes in early May 2027. The move is designed to provide sufficient time for stadium preparations, national team activities and final logistical arrangements before AFCON 2027 kicks off on June 19, 2027.
The early start date represents a significant adjustment for Kenyan football as stakeholders seek to avoid fixture congestion during a season that will also feature domestic cup competitions, continental club assignments and international windows.
With Kenya preparing to host Africa’s biggest football tournament for the first time, the league calendar is expected to be carefully managed to ensure players remain available for national team commitments and that key venues are handed over for tournament preparations in good time.
CAF has already confirmed that AFCON 2027 will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, making it imperative for domestic competitions across the host nations to conclude well before the tournament begins.
The planned August 15 kick-off will also allow FKF to maintain alignment with the international football calendar while creating room for the AFCON qualifying windows scheduled between September 2026 and March 2027.
Clubs are now expected to intensify transfer activity and pre-season preparations in readiness for what promises to be one of the most important campaigns in Kenyan football history. The season will not only determine domestic champions and continental representatives but will also serve as a crucial dress rehearsal for the country’s hosting ambitions ahead of AFCON 2027.
The full fixture list, including match dates and venues, is expected to be released by the Football Kenya Federation in the coming weeks.
