Defending FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia have begun what is expected to be a busy transfer window, with a number of departures lined up as the club restructures its squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The record Kenyan champions are looking to balance their squad after reclaiming the league title, with sources indicating that several foreign players could be on their way out as Gor Mahia prepare for another demanding campaign that includes both the FKF Premier League and CAF inter-club football.
Ghanaian midfielder Enock Morrison has already completed his departure, while fellow Ghanaian Ebenezer Assifuah and Cameroonian forward Patrick Essombe are also expected to leave the club. Although the latter two exits have not been officially confirmed, they are understood to be among the players likely to be released as Gor Mahia make room for new signings.
Morrison leaves after influential spell
Among the confirmed departures, Morrison’s exit is perhaps the most significant.
The technically gifted midfielder joined Gor Mahia with high expectations and quickly established himself as one of the team’s most dependable performers. Comfortable operating as a central midfielder or in a more advanced role, Morrison became the heartbeat of Gor Mahia’s midfield thanks to his composure on the ball, intelligent passing and ability to dictate the tempo of matches.
Throughout the 2025/26 campaign, the former Ghana youth international consistently delivered influential performances, contributing crucial goals and assists while helping Gor Mahia maintain their title charge. His work ethic and creativity made him one of the standout foreign players in the FKF Premier League.
His departure leaves a sizeable void in midfield, one that Gor Mahia’s technical bench will be keen to address before the new season begins.
Assifuah’s stay could end after six months
Another player expected to depart is experienced Ghanaian striker Ebenezer Kofi Assifuah-Inkoom, whose time at Gor Mahia could end just six months after his arrival.
The striker joined the club during the January transfer window to strengthen the attack at a critical stage of the season. While adapting to Kenyan football, Assifuah still managed to produce important goals that proved decisive in Gor Mahia’s successful league title run.
His experience was evident in key moments, with his intelligent movement inside the penalty area and clinical finishing providing Gor Mahia with another attacking option alongside their existing forwards.
Assifuah arrived in Kenya boasting one of the most impressive resumes among foreign players in the league. He rose to international prominence after finishing as the top scorer at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he helped Ghana secure a third-place finish.
His professional career has taken him across Europe and Asia, featuring for clubs including Liberty Professionals, FC Sion in Switzerland, Le Havre and Pau FC in France, before later playing in Malaysia. He has also earned caps for Ghana’s senior national team.
With his short-term contract understood to have expired, an exit appears increasingly likely unless fresh terms are agreed.
Essombe could also move on
Cameroonian attacker Patrick Essombe is another foreign player expected to leave as Gor Mahia continue their restructuring.
Essombe arrived with a reputation for pace, physical strength and versatility across the frontline. Although he showed glimpses of quality during the season, he found regular starting opportunities difficult to come by due to intense competition for attacking places.
Despite limited starts, the Cameroonian remained an important squad member, contributing in league matches and offering valuable depth throughout the campaign. His willingness to play in multiple attacking positions made him a useful option whenever called upon.
However, with Gor Mahia looking to refresh their foreign contingent, Essombe is among the players whose future appears uncertain.
Bigger rebuild underway
The anticipated departures form part of what is shaping up to be a broader squad overhaul at the club.
Gor Mahia are already strongly linked with several new signings as they seek to strengthen key positions ahead of the new season. The club is expected to reinforce the goalkeeping department, defence and midfield while also adding more attacking options capable of competing at both domestic and continental level.
The restructuring is viewed as necessary after another long campaign, with the technical bench keen to build a squad capable of defending the FKF Premier League title while making a stronger impact in CAF competitions.
Club officials have previously indicated that player recruitment will be conducted strategically, balancing experienced campaigners with emerging talent.
