Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have apologised to supporters after their highly anticipated FKF Premier League clash against Mara Sugar FC was cancelled following a court order.

The match, which had been scheduled for Sunday at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, was stopped pending further directions from the federation and relevant authorities after Mara Sugar moved to court over the venue dispute.

In a statement shared through the club’s social media platforms, Gor Mahia expressed regret to fans who had already planned trips to Homa Bay for the crucial encounter.

“As per the court order attached, tomorrow’s match against Mara Sugar in Homa Bay has been cancelled pending further direction from the Federation. We apologise to all fans.

Our focus remains unchanged. Opponents can play all the monkey games they want with the venue but one thing is certain, we are ready to beat them anywhere, anytime. Otoyo will still cry premium tears.”

Before the cancellation, Gor Mahia had already travelled to Homa Bay and conducted a training session at the newly upgraded Raila Odinga Stadium Homabay (ROSH) as part of preparations for the high-stakes league fixture.

The team later received a warm welcome from the Homa Bay County Government led by Governor Gladys Wanga, who hosted the players and club officials for dinner ahead of the anticipated showdown.

The cancellation came as thousands of the Green Army had already begun preparations to travel to Homa Bay from Saturday, May 24, for a fixture many fans considered one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the weekend.

Mara Sugar, however, challenged the venue decision in court, arguing that they had been denied the opportunity to host the match at a venue of their choice despite being the designated home team.

The venue controversy has sparked heated debate among Kenyan football fans, with many citing FKF regulations regarding venue changes and match organisation.

According to FKF rules, clubs are required to communicate requests for fixture or venue adjustments within the stipulated timelines and in accordance with federation procedures. The regulations also outline the responsibilities of home clubs regarding approved match venues and security compliance.

Despite the postponement, Gor Mahia maintained a confident tone, insisting they are prepared to face Mara Sugar at any venue once the matter is resolved.

The federation is now expected to issue further communication on whether the fixture will be rescheduled, relocated, or subjected to additional legal review.
