FIFA, CAF Step Into FKF Leadership Dispute, Demand Urgent Clarification

Global football governing body FIFA has formally intervened in the escalating leadership crisis at Football Kenya Federation, placing the federation under intense scrutiny following a controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution.

In a letter dated April 26, 2026, and copied to CAF, FIFA confirmed it is working jointly with the continental body to assess the legality and procedural integrity of a decision reportedly made on April 24.

Controversial Resolution Under Review

The disputed resolution allegedly required: FKF President Hussein Rashid Mohammed, NEC member Abdullahi Yusuf Ibrahim, Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru to step aside provisionally from their roles.

However, FIFA has not validated the decision and instead emphasized that it is seeking clarity on whether the process complied with FKF statutes.

FIFA Demands Documentation

As part of its investigation, FIFA has directed FKF’s NEC to submit comprehensive documentation, including:

  • Evidence of how the April 24 NEC meeting was convened
  • Official meeting agenda
  • Attendance records and proof of quorum
  • Voting results
  • Supporting materials justifying the resolution
  • Proof that affected officials were granted the right to defend themselves

The global body specifically referenced Articles 38, 40, and 41 of the FKF Statutes, which govern executive procedures, decision-making thresholds, and disciplinary safeguards.

“In this context, and for the purposes of this ongoing assessment, we kindly request the cooperation of the FKF National Executive Committee in providing information and documentation enabling us to verify whether the process leading to the provisional dismissal of the above-mentioned officials was conducted in accordance with the FKF Statutes, in particular Articles 38, 40 and 41 thereof. This includes, inter alia, clarification as to how the meeting at which the Resolution was allegedly adopted was convened, whether the applicable quorum and voting requirements were met, and whether the affected officials were duly granted their statutory right to be heard prior to the adoption of the Resolution, as required under Article 41 paragraph 4 of the FKF Statutes”, reads the letter.

Deadline Set for FKF

FIFA has given FKF until May 1, 2026, to provide all requested information, signaling the urgency and seriousness of the matter.

The letter underscores that the assessment aims to establish a “clear and accurate understanding” of both the process and the underlying circumstances behind the resolution.

Potential Implications

Depending on the findings, the outcome could significantly reshape FKF leadership. Possible scenarios include:

  • Nullification of the NEC resolution
  • Reinstatement of affected officials
  • Internal disciplinary action
  • Sanctions against FKF in extreme cases

Governance Crisis Deepens

The development marks a significant escalation in FKF’s internal dispute, shifting the matter from a domestic governance issue to one under international oversight.

With FIFA and CAF now directly involved, the coming days are expected to be decisive in determining the future leadership and stability of Kenyan football.
