Benni McCarthy Set for Emotional South Africa Reunion as Kenya Land Tough AFCON 2027 Qualifying Group

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy is set for a dramatic reunion with his homeland after Harambee Stars were drawn against Bafana Bfana in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The draw, conducted in Cairo on Tuesday, 19 May, placed Kenya in a highly competitive Group D alongside South Africa, Guinea national football team and Eritrea national football team.

For McCarthy, South Africa’s all-time leading scorer and one of the country’s greatest football icons, the fixture carries deep personal emotions. The former striker built his legendary status while wearing the famous green and gold of Bafana Bafana, but he will now be tasked with plotting their downfall as he seeks to guide Kenya back to continental relevance.

The rivalry between Kenya and South Africa has grown over the years through AFCON qualifiers and international friendlies, often producing tense and emotionally charged encounters. Now, with McCarthy standing on the Kenyan touchline, the upcoming clashes are expected to generate massive excitement among East African and South African football fans alike.

Eritrea Fixture Revives Painful Memories

Kenyan supporters will also be eyeing revenge against Eritrea, a side that inflicted one of Harambee Stars’ most shocking qualification setbacks nearly two decades ago.

The two nations met during the qualification race for the 2008 AFCON tournament, where Eritrea stunned Kenya home and away. Eritrea first silenced Kasarani Stadium with a 2-1 victory on September 2, 2006, before completing the double with a 1-0 win in Asmara on March 24, 2007.

Those defeats remain painful memories for many Kenyan fans, especially after Eritrea eventually finished above Kenya in Group 6.

Guinea Present Another Major Test

Guinea’s Syli Nationale also represent a dangerous obstacle for Harambee Stars. Although the two sides have never faced off in AFCON qualifiers, they have shared several intense battles in FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns between 1992 and 2008.

Their most recent competitive meeting came in Conakry on October 12, 2008, during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Guinea edged Kenya 3-2 in an entertaining contest.

Interestingly, the two nations have shared an evenly balanced rivalry over the years, with both sides recording four wins each from their last eight competitive meetings.

East Africa Gears Up for Historic AFCON 2027

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournament itself will already be historic, as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania prepare to jointly host Africa’s biggest football competition from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

It will mark the first time in nearly four decades that East Africa hosts the continental showpiece, with excitement already building across the region.

AFCON 2027 Qualifier Dates

The qualification campaign will be played across three FIFA international windows:

  • Matchdays 1 and 2: September 21 – October 6, 2026
  • Matchdays 3 and 4: November 9 – 17, 2026
  • Matchdays 5 and 6: March 22 – 30, 2027

With McCarthy facing his homeland, old rivalries being reignited, and East Africa preparing for a historic AFCON, Kenya’s qualification journey is already shaping up to be one of the continent’s most captivating football stories.
