Whenever Gor Mahia FC face Mathare United, history has a way of resurfacing. Few names capture the significance of this fixture better than Jacques Tuyisenge and Dan Sserunkuma, two forwards separated by era but united by goals that shaped Gor Mahia’s modern success.

The duo stand shoulder to shoulder as Gor Mahia’s joint top scorers against Mathare United, each with five goals in the fixture. Beyond the numbers, their strikes arrived at moments that carried real weight, goals that either steadied title charges or underlined K’Ogalo’s dominance in decisive phases of the season.

Tuyisenge: Reliability Across Campaigns

For Jacques Tuyisenge, goals against Mathare United became a recurring theme across multiple seasons. The Rwandan international was not a one-season wonder in this matchup; instead, he delivered consistently whenever the two sides crossed paths.

His first notable contribution came in May 2016, when he scored a late header to seal a 2–0 league victory at Nyayo National Stadium. Later that year, in October 2016, Tuyisenge rose again, literally powering home another header in a 2–1 win, ending a personal goal drought and restoring his confidence in a pressure-filled contest.

The striker’s composure was again on display in May 2019, when he calmly converted a penalty in a 2–2 draw at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos. Earlier, during the September 2018 title celebration match, he had opened the scoring with a low, precise finish before Mathare fought back to draw.

While only four of those goals are clearly documented in match reports, historical records credit Tuyisenge with five goals overall against Mathare United, making them the opponents he troubled most during his Gor Mahia career. It is a statistic that reflects his instinct for rising to familiar challenges.

Sserunkuma: A Ruthless Purple Patch

If Tuyisenge represents consistency across seasons, Dan Sserunkuma symbolizes an era of ruthless dominance. The Ugandan striker’s five goals against Mathare United came in a blistering spell between August 2012 and February 2014, a period that coincided with Gor Mahia’s resurgence as a championship force.

The run began with a dramatic brace in a 2–2 draw in August 2012, as Gor Mahia came back from two goals down—a performance that hinted at a side learning how to survive adversity. In the following season, Sserunkuma delivered again, scoring the decisive goal in a narrow March victory, before opening the scoring in a crucial 2–1 win in October 2013 as the title race reached its most intense phase.

He completed the sequence at the start of the next campaign, scoring the only goal in a 1–0 win, an early statement in a season that would end with Gor Mahia retaining the league title on the final day. Those goals were not just finishes; they were milestones in a journey that ended an 18-year league title drought in 2013 and cemented Sserunkuma’s legendary status at the club.

A Shared Legacy

Though their styles differed, Sserunkuma the explosive poacher, Tuyisenge the composed and physical finisher, their impact against Mathare United converges at the same number: five goals, delivered when Gor Mahia needed authority, belief, or momentum.

As Gor Mahia prepare for yet another encounter with Mathare United, the records of Tuyisenge and Sserunkuma serve as a powerful reminder. This fixture has often demanded more than talent; it has required strikers with nerve, timing, and an understanding of the club’s expectations.

For K’Ogalo supporters, the names Tuyisenge and Sserunkuma are more than statistics, they are symbols of eras when goals against familiar rivals helped shape championship stories.
