Supporters of Gor Mahia have reacted with amusement and confidence after rivals AFC Leopards suffered a humiliating defeat to Mathare United at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.

The result dealt a blow to Leopards’ hopes of closing the gap at the top of the FKF Premier League table, while Gor Mahia supporters remained confident their team still holds the advantage in the title race.

Among those weighing in was sports journalist and lifelong Gor Mahia supporter Tom Bwana, who dismissed any suggestion that the defeat would significantly alter the league dynamics.

“We are still on. The charge is still on and we are seven points clear,” Bwana said while reacting to the result.

He also addressed AFC Leopards supporters who have been pointing to their game in hand as a potential advantage.

“They are saying they have a game in hand. But a game in hand is not points in hand,” he remarked confidently.

Title Race Still Alive

Despite the heavy loss suffered by Leopards, Bwana insisted Gor Mahia fans should not panic about the championship race.

According to him, a tighter race could actually make the league more dramatic and memorable.

“There is no need to panic about the league because of today’s performance,” he said.

“In fact, we need a story at the end of the season. I think this is a good result. We don’t need to open a very big gap.”

His comments reflect a belief among some K’Ogalo supporters that a competitive finish could make the eventual title victory even sweeter.

Dreaming of a Dramatic Finish

Bwana even suggested he would welcome a scenario where the title is decided in dramatic fashion against AFC Leopards.

“In fact, when AFC Leopards come, they need to beat us so that we win the league on goal difference,” he said with a smile.

“I want them to feel the pain. I want them to have a story.”

The journalist argued that although Gor Mahia have won several league titles over the years, many lacked the dramatic narrative that makes championships memorable.

“You know we’ve been winning the league for so long, but it has been colourless,” he said.

“Other than 2013 and 2015, I really don’t have a proper story about the other titles we’ve had.”

Confidence Ahead of Derby

Bwana concluded by expressing confidence that Gor Mahia would still come out on top when the two bitter rivals eventually meet.

“We’re going to beat them. No problem. We’re going to beat them,” he said.

The reaction highlights the intense rivalry between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, one of the fiercest football rivalries in East Africa, often drawing huge crowds whenever the two sides face off.

With the FKF Premier League season entering its decisive phase, both sets of fans will be watching closely to see whether the title race lives up to the dramatic script some supporters are already predicting.
