Charles Akonnor Building More Than Footballers at Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has revealed that his mission at K’Ogalo extends far beyond tactics, training sessions, and winning matches.

The Ghanaian tactician says one of his key objectives is to prepare Gor Mahia players for successful careers in European football by shaping them both as athletes and as responsible individuals.

Speaking to Dollar TV Kenya and quoted by Pulse Sports, Akonnor explained that modern coaching requires a deep understanding of players’ personal development in addition to football matters.

ā€œSometimes it goes beyond football, beyond tactics… you need to understand these boys very well so that when they are going on the wrong path, you direct them,ā€ said Akonnor.

Developing Character Alongside Talent

According to Akonnor, many young footballers possess immense talent but often lack a clear understanding of their long-term purpose in the game.

The former Ghana national team coach believes education, mentorship, and guidance are essential ingredients in helping players maximize their potential.

ā€œSome of them have no idea why they are playing football and you need to educate them about certain things because they are good boys and I believe they listen and so as time goes on, they will improve.ā€

His approach reflects a growing trend in elite football where coaches are increasingly taking on mentorship roles, helping players navigate challenges both on and off the pitch.

A European Dream for K’Ogalo Stars

After guiding Gor Mahia to the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League title and earning Coach of the Year recognition, Akonnor is now focused on ensuring that his players become attractive prospects for clubs abroad.

The coach is optimistic that the groundwork being laid today will produce future European stars from the current Gor Mahia squad.

ā€œWe are hoping that in three, four, five years’ time, they will be big players in Europe doing very well and the transition has to be good.ā€

Akonnor emphasized that a successful move overseas requires much more than footballing ability. Players must be mentally prepared, disciplined, and capable of adapting to new cultures and professional environments.

Building Better Human Beings

For Akonnor, success will not only be measured by trophies won or matches played but also by the quality of individuals his players become.

ā€œThe fact that we are here, we want to try as much as possible to help them grow in that area not just coaching but grow as human beings and footballers on and off the field.ā€

The philosophy aligns perfectly with Gor Mahia’s long-standing ambition of producing players capable of competing at the highest levels of world football while maintaining strong character and professionalism.

As K’Ogalo prepares for continental assignments and future domestic challenges, Akonnor’s vision suggests that the club is investing not only in winning today but also in creating the next generation of Kenyan football stars.
