Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has expressed gratitude to God, the club’s management, technical bench, players, and supporters after being named the 2025/26 SportPesa League Coach of the Season during the Gala Awards held at Glee Hotel in Nairobi.
The Ghanaian tactician, who guided K’Ogalo to a record-extending 22nd league title, reflected on the club’s remarkable journey this season, admitting that expectations were modest when he first arrived at the club.
“A moment and time are in the hands of the Creator. In moments like this, we need to remember how good God has been to us. For me, I thank God for a wonderful job,” said Akonnor.
The coach revealed that one of the first things he learned upon joining Gor Mahia was the immense pressure that comes with managing Kenya’s most successful club.
“When we came here, nothing was expected of us. During our unveiling, they told us that you can win all your matches, but don’t lose certain games. That was shocking, but it helped me understand the culture and expectations at this great club.”
Akonnor reserved special praise for the Gor Mahia management, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout the campaign, especially during difficult moments.
“It’s been wonderful. Whenever we faced challenges, management was always there for us. They never hesitated to support us in a positive way and for that, I am very grateful.”
The former Ghana international also paid tribute to his technical team, including assistant coach Kobe Mensah, goalkeeper coach Ben Owu, video analyst Kofi, and physical trainer Steve, crediting them for their dedication behind the scenes.
He was equally appreciative of Gor Mahia’s passionate supporters, describing them as demanding but immensely supportive.

“Our supporters are really good. They support us all the time, but they don’t understand losing. Once you lose, you are in trouble,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.
Akonnor, however, reserved his highest praise for the players, whom he credited for their resilience and mental strength throughout the title-winning season.
“These players have done so well. What impressed me most was their mental toughness. They reached a level where they understood exactly what they had to do, and that was very important for our success.”
The award winner also acknowledged fellow Coach of the Year nominees Fred Ambani and Sammy Omollo, praising their efforts and competitiveness during the season.
In particular, Akonnor admitted that Ambani’s side pushed Gor Mahia all the way in the title race.
“At one point we were leading by nine points, then suddenly it became four, then one. It was scary. You can imagine how we were breathing all over our bodies. They made us think and gave us every reason to keep fighting.”
He commended their belief and determination, saying their relentless pursuit helped motivate Gor Mahia to remain focused until the title was secured.
“AFC, good show. You made us believe that we could not afford to relax. You pushed us to keep fighting and believing in ourselves.”
Akonnor concluded by praising SportPesa for reviving player and coaching awards, noting the positive impact such recognition has on football development.
“What SportPesa is doing is incredible. These awards mean a lot to players and coaches. I’m from Ghana and I understand the impact such initiatives create. Continue doing this great job.”
The coach ended his speech by thanking everyone involved and dedicating the achievement to the entire Gor Mahia family.
“Truly, the K’Ogalo family did it. Thank you very much, and God bless us all.”
