Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has praised his team’s tactical discipline and belief following their hard-fought 1-0 victory over AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby.
Speaking after the match, Akonnor revealed that the win was a product of detailed preparation and precise execution on the pitch.
“We studied the opponent very well compared to the first round and strategised accordingly. In the first half, we controlled the game completely—they couldn’t operate the way they wanted, and that was exactly our plan,” he said.
The coach lauded his players not just for the result, but for their overall performance and mentality, especially after failing to convert multiple chances early on.
“The boys did so well. I salute them for their performance and their belief. We created many chances in the first half but couldn’t score. Still, they kept believing and working hard, and in the end, they were rewarded.”
Akonnor also explained his second-half tactical adjustments, including the introduction of fresh legs to maintain intensity and balance.
“It was a tactical approach. We had to manage certain players carefully. Patrick started very well but unfortunately picked up an injury. We brought in Asifua, knowing he could give us something, even if he’s not ready for 90 minutes.”
Despite describing the winning goal as somewhat fortunate, Akonnor insisted it was a deserved outcome based on his team’s dominance and persistence.
“The goal may have come through luck, but we had already done the hard work. When you work that hard, you always get rewarded. And today, the boys did exactly that.”
The victory reinforces Gor Mahia’s strong form and highlights a growing tactical identity under Akonnor, built on structure, discipline, and belief in execution.
