Gor Mahia Chairman Ambrose Rachier has called for calm, fairness, and affordability amid growing concerns over ticketing for the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby set for April 26.
Ticketing Concerns Spark Fan Frustration
The derby, hosted by AFC Leopards, has been marred by controversy following a sharp increase in ticket prices and reported irregularities in ticket distribution. Regular tickets, traditionally priced at Ksh 300, have been restructured into multiple tiers:
- Early Bird – Ksh 300
- Advance – Ksh 500
- Matchday (Gate) – Ksh 1000
- VIP – Ksh 2000
Fans have raised serious complaints, claiming payments were made but tickets were not delivered. Others allege they were incorrectly assigned ticket categories after purchase, leading to confusion and dissatisfaction among supporters.
Push for Affordable Ticketing
Rachier also urged stakeholders to consider the economic realities facing fans, advocating for fair and accessible pricing to encourage higher turnout.
“Let us make entry ticketing affordable to attract more fans. I’m not speaking on behalf of AFC Leopards, but as a stakeholder in the game. Given the state of the economy, we should settle on reasonable charges,” he stated.
Rachier Calls for Peace and Responsibility
Addressing the issue, Rachier emphasized the need for unity and discipline among fans of both clubs.
“I want to appeal to the football fraternity, particularly those attending the upcoming derby, to observe peace. Let us maintain the good conduct we have demonstrated in recent matches,” he said.
He commended supporters, stewards, and club officials for fostering a peaceful environment in past derbies, noting a significant decline in crowd trouble.
“Where people expect violence, our fans have shown restraint. Let us continue in that spirit so we are not labeled as violent supporters,” he added.
A Call to Embrace the Derby Spirit
As anticipation builds for one of Kenya’s biggest football fixtures, Rachier encouraged fans to embrace the occasion responsibly.
“Let us enjoy the match. Support your teams, be the 12th man or woman, and uphold the spirit of the game.”
With tensions rising off the pitch, all eyes now turn to whether organizers will address the ticketing concerns before kickoff.
