Philemon Otieno, the long-serving captain of Gor Mahia, has urged his teammates to remain calm and focused while fully appreciating the magnitude of the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby against fierce rivals AFC Leopards.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Otieno emphasized his leadership role as one of the most experienced players in the squad. He noted the importance of guiding younger teammates who may be facing the intensity of the derby for the first time.
“As one of the senior-most players in the team, I have to encourage the young boys. I have the experience from previous derbies and I know what it takes to play in these kinds of games,” said Otieno.

Despite the derby’s massive profile, the defender urged his teammates to approach the match with a balanced mindset.
“It’s just to urge them that the derby is like any other game, but at the same time, we have to protect the bragging rights. Playing against AFC is always a good feeling,” he added.
The Mashemeji Derby remains one of the biggest fixtures not only in Kenya but across East Africa, drawing massive attention from fans and media alike. Otieno acknowledged the significance of the occasion, describing it as a major source of motivation for players.
“Playing in the derby is a motivation to us because it is one of the most highly advertised matches and the stakes are always high. It’s a big game not only in Kenya but in the whole of East Africa,” he noted.

The Gor Mahia captain also made a passionate appeal to supporters, urging them to turn up in large numbers and create an electrifying atmosphere.
“I want to urge our fans all over the country to come out in large numbers and give us the support we need. As players, we will do all we can to make them proud,” he said.
With both sides eyeing supremacy and crucial points, all eyes will be on the Mashemeji Derby as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards renew their historic rivalry in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
