Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has struck a calm but focused tone ahead of the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards, emphasizing discipline, consistency, and mental strength over hype.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference, the coach made it clear that his side’s primary focus remains internal performance rather than their historic rivals.
“We are looking at ourselves; we are not looking at AFC. We are looking at what we can do to maintain our place at the top. But let’s not forget that this is not the only match we have; we shall be playing other matches. Our match against AFC Leopards is one of the biggest matches as far as the Kenyan league is concerned, but it is not a decider,” he said.
Despite the magnitude of the Mashemeji Derby—widely regarded as the biggest fixture in Kenyan football—the coach downplayed its title-deciding implications, urging perspective within the broader league campaign.
He further highlighted the importance of focus and consistency, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football.
“Football includes winning and losing matches, and what you have to do is to remain focused. We should be the team that does not give any opponents a chance. We want to focus on this match.”
Mental preparation, he noted, has been a key part of Gor Mahia’s build-up, given the emotional intensity and external pressure that surrounds the derby.
“We know that mentally we need to be strong because this match comes with a lot of issues. The boys have trained very well, and we are ready. We have done everything within our power to ensure that the boys are mentally prepared,” he concluded.
With both sides locked in a tight title race, the Mashemeji Derby promises high drama—but Gor Mahia’s approach suggests a team determined to stay grounded, focused, and firmly in control of their destiny.
