Gor Mahia were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by a resilient Kariobangi Sharks side in a tightly contested FKF Premier League clash at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani on Saturday afternoon.

Coming into the match with high expectations and a promise of victory from head coach Charles Akonnor, K’Ogalo were unable to break down a disciplined Sharks defense despite creating several scoring opportunities.

Fast Start, Missed Chances

The game got off to an electric start, with Gor Mahia nearly taking the lead in the 17th minute. Samuel Kapen found himself in a perfect position inside the box but failed to convert a simple tap-in, the ball rolling inches wide of the post in what proved to be one of the clearest chances of the match.

Both sides struggled to find the cutting edge in the final third. The first half ended goalless, with fans treated to an evenly balanced contest marked by tactical discipline and end-to-end action.

Second Half Intensity

The second half resumed with renewed urgency, as Musa Shariff came close early on, only to see his effort blocked by Sharks goalkeeper.Ā Moments later, he missed another opportunity, highlighting Sharks’ continued threat on the counter.

Alpha Onyango came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes from time, forcing a superb save from the Kariobangi Sharks goalkeeper with a brilliantly struck freekick that looked destined for the top corner.

At the other end, Stephen Bwire nearly snatched it for Kariobangi Sharks in the 87th minute after a dangerous run into the box, but Mike Kibwage came up big to deny the effort and keep Gor Mahia level.

A tense finish with both sides knocking on the door, but still no breakthrough!

Gor Mahia pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, with Enock Morisson attempting a long-range strike in the 65th minute that narrowly sailed over the bar.

Between the posts, goalkeeper Gad Matthews proved crucial for Gor Mahia, pulling off vital saves to deny Sharks and keep his side in the contest.

Tactical Changes

Coach Akonnor made several substitutions in a bid to inject fresh energy into his side. Samuel Kapen was replaced by Ebenezer Assifuah in the 54th minute, while Ben Stanley came on for Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw later in the game.

K’Ogalo further shuffled their squad late on, introducing Patrick Essombe for Musa Shariff and Fidel Origa for Jackson Dwang in the closing minutes.

Despite these changes, neither side managed to find the decisive goal.

Full Time: Points Shared

After 90 minutes of intense football, the match ended in a barren draw, with both teams forced to settle for a point.

The result will be seen as a missed opportunity for Gor Mahia, especially after Akonnor’s pre-match confidence.

Speaking before kickoff, the coach had said:

Ā ā€œI expect us to win… it will be difficult, but at the end, we want to see ourselves as victorious by the 90th minute.ā€

While that victory did not materialize, Gor Mahia will take positives from their defensive solidity, while also recognizing the need to be more clinical in front of goal.

What It Means

The draw keeps Gor Mahia in the title conversation, 5 points a head of number 2; AFC Leopards but raises questions about their finishing, particularly in matches where they dominate possession.

For Kariobangi Sharks, the result represents a strong defensive performance and a valuable point against one of the league’s top sides.
