In a somber development for Kenyan sports and politics, the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, revered as the patron of the Gor Mahia football club, has passed away at the age of 80. His family confirmed that he died in India, where he had traveled for a routine medical checkup.

Tragically, the events leading to his death unfolded after a morning walk. It was around 7:45 AM when he suddenly experienced breathing difficulties, leading to his collapse.

Despite immediate efforts to save him, including transporting him to a nearby private hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly, ultimately resulting in his untimely passing.

Raila Odinga’s patronship to Gor Mahia dates back to the early 2000s when he took over the mantle of patron from the esteemed Engineer Architect Joel Nyaseme. His influence and contributions were pivotal during a time when Kenyan football faced numerous challenges.

Under his patronage, Gor Mahia not only regained prominence but also made a significant impact on the performance of the club that was established in 1968. His leadership came at a crucial juncture when both K’Ogalo and AFC Leopards faced relegation, and the overall state of football in the country was struggling.

A dedicated supporter of Gor Mahia, Raila was known for his generosity, often stepping in to assist the club financially when needed. He played a crucial role in securing the first official sponsorship deal for Gor Mahia, with TUZO in 2011, which amounted to 38 million Kenyan shillings. His unwavering support for the team and commitment to the sport earned him immense respect among players and fans alike.

In addition to his dedication to Kenyan football, Raila Odinga was a passionate sportsman throughout his life. His early years saw him playing for Luo Union before the formation of Gor Mahia, reflecting his deep-rooted love for soccer. He was not only present at football matches but also avidly followed athletics events across the nation, embodying the spirit of a true sports enthusiast.

Known affectionately as “Baba,” his impact extended beyond the pitch. He was a loyal supporter of Arsenal FC, often celebrated for his enthusiastic fandom and connection to the sport on an international level.

Though Raila Odinga has departed, his legacy within the sports community and beyond is indelible. As country and fans mourn his loss, they remain united in remembering a leader whose spirit and passion for football will forever resonate. Rest in peace, Baba; your contributions will never be forgotten.
