The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has promised fans that teargas will no longer be used during football matches to help create a safer environment.
Many fans and players have recently complained about police using too much tear gas to control crowds at football events. They have questioned whether this is necessary or appropriate.
At Dandora Stadium, matches—especially those involving Gor Mahia or AFC Leopards—have been interrupted as fans and players try to escape the teargas used outside the venue.
In response to questions from Mozzart Sport about police using excessive force, FKF CEO Harold Ndege said that teargas will not be used at football events anymore. He mentioned, “I met with senior members of the National Police Service, and we agreed that teargas should not be part of football events. We need to find other ways to manage fans.”
Ndege also talked about plans to train police officers who manage football matches to meet CAF and FIFA standards. He said, “In the near future, we will ensure police officers receive training from CAF on how to handle football events. This way, they can stay calm even when dealing with rowdy fans inside the stadium.”
According to FIFA rules, police officers should not be present inside the stadium.
