Mike Kibwage: Joining Gor Mahia Was a Risk Worth Taking

Gor Mahia defender Mike Kibwage has described his move to K’Ogalo as a bold gamble that has paid off in the best possible way after helping the club secure the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title.

The towering centre-back, who joined the record champions at the start of the season, has been one of the team’s most consistent performers throughout the campaign and believes his decision to leave his comfort zone was fully justified.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport, Kibwage expressed his delight after winning the first league title of his career.

“I feel very happy and blessed to win the league, my first ever title in my career, and this is something I had targeted from the beginning of the season,” said Kibwage.

The former Tusker FC defender admitted that joining Gor Mahia came with immense pressure due to the quality of players already at the club, but he embraced the challenge knowing it would push him to higher levels.

“Of course, I am very happy to achieve it in my first season wearing Gor Mahia colours. I can confidently say the risk I took in making this move has been successful, especially now that we have won the league, and I have played a major role in it because I have been consistent throughout the season.”

Kibwage revealed that competition for places was one of the realities he expected when he signed for the Green Army, but rather than intimidate him, it motivated him to improve.

“When I got the opportunity to join Gor Mahia, I knew I had to be bold enough to take the challenge. I also understood it would not be a walk in the park in terms of getting playing time because everyone at Gor is talented in their own way.”

“But I knew the pressure would sharpen me and help me become a better player. Looking back now, I am proud of that decision.

Kibwage arrived at Gor Mahia following an impressive 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with Harambee Stars and quickly established himself as a key figure in the club’s title-winning squad.

His commanding displays at the heart of the defence played a crucial role in helping K’Ogalo secure a record-extending 22nd league title, cementing his place among the club’s standout performers this season.

With his first major trophy now secured, Kibwage will be eager to build on a remarkable debut season as Gor Mahia prepares for both domestic challenges and the upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
