Nyayo National Stadium turned into a sea of green and white on Sunday as Gor Mahia officially lifted the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League trophy, marking a record-extending 22nd league title in the club’s illustrious history.

Thousands of supporters packed the stadium to witness the coronation of Kenya’s most successful football club, creating an electric atmosphere that celebrated not only another championship but also the rich legacy that has made K’Ogalo a household name across East Africa.

The title triumph secured Gor Mahia’s return to the CAF Champions League after reclaiming the league crown and finishing five points clear at the summit of the standings. The championship was mathematically confirmed a week earlier following AFC Leopards’ defeat to APS Bomet, ensuring that the final day fixture against Nairobi United would serve as a grand celebration of a remarkable campaign.

The occasion attracted a host of former players, club legends and distinguished guests who came to celebrate yet another milestone in the history of K’Ogalo.

Among those present was club legend and former captain Jerim Onyango, whose appearance was warmly received by supporters. The former goalkeeper, remembered for his leadership and contributions during one of the club’s most successful eras, joined fellow legends in witnessing another milestone in K’Ogalo’s illustrious journey.

His presence alongside former stars such as Austin Odhiambo and Michael Olunga highlighted the strong bond that continues to unite generations of Gor Mahia players. From past captains to current leaders, the occasion served as a celebration of the club’s enduring legacy and the individuals who have helped build Gor Mahia into Kenya’s most successful football institution.

For many supporters, seeing former captains and club legends gathered at Nyayo National Stadium added a special touch to the festivities, reinforcing the sense of family and tradition that defines K’Ogalo.

From the club’s golden era heroes to modern-day icons, the celebrations showcased the enduring spirit of a team whose influence extends far beyond the football pitch.

As supporters filled every available section of the stadium, chants, songs and club anthems echoed throughout the afternoon, creating an atmosphere befitting a club that has dominated Kenyan football for decades.

Guard of Honour for the Champions

In a show of sportsmanship, Nairobi United accorded Gor Mahia a guard of honour before kickoff, acknowledging the champions’ achievements during the 2025/26 season. The gesture was warmly received by supporters and added a special touch to an already memorable occasion.

The match itself ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat for K’Ogalo, with Enock Machaka scoring the decisive goal for Nairobi United. However, the result did little to dampen the celebratory mood as the league title had already been secured. Gor Mahia concluded the campaign with 69 points after a season marked by consistency, resilience and determination.

Emotional Farewell for Captain Philemon Otieno

One of the most emotional moments of the day came when captain Philemon Otieno led the team during the trophy presentation ceremony.

For many supporters, it felt like the end of an era as the long-serving defender completed what is expected to be his final championship lap as club captain.

Having played a crucial role in Gor Mahia’s recent successes, Otieno received a standing ovation from the Green Army, who applauded his leadership, commitment and service to the club.

As he raised the trophy before the packed stadium, it was a fitting image of a captain who has helped write another successful chapter in Gor Mahia’s storied history.

Raila Junior Joins the Celebration

The triumph also guarantees the club a place in next season’s CAF Champions League, where K’Ogalo will once again carry Kenya’s hopes on the continental stage.

The celebrations continued long after the final whistle as players, officials, legends and supporters joined together to commemorate a historic achievement.
