Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia have officially been crowned the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League champions, sealing a record-extending 22nd league title on Sunday despite not kicking a ball.
K’Ogalo secured the championship after fierce rivals AFC Leopards suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to league debutants APS Bomet at Kericho Green Stadium.
The result mathematically ended Ingwe’s slim hopes of catching Gor Mahia at the summit. Leopards, having played a game more than their traditional rivals, can no longer match Gor’s impressive tally of 68 points.
The title triumph marks a dramatic return to the top for Gor Mahia, who lost the crown last season to Kenya Police FC. Now, K’Ogalo are set to celebrate their coronation in style when they face Nairobi United in their final match of the campaign.
APS Bomet Become Gor Mahia’s Unexpected Heroes
Heading into Sunday’s encounter, AFC Leopards supporters were hoping their side would dispatch APS Bomet and keep the title race alive. However, APS Bomet had other ideas.
A stunning brace from Philip Wasai silenced Ingwe’s hopes and sent shockwaves across the league. Leopards only managed a late consolation after an own goal by Edward Masembe, but it was far from enough to rescue the crucial points they desperately needed.
The defeat extended AFC Leopards’ painful wait for a league title, a drought stretching back to 1998, long before many current players were even born.
SDT Drama Delays Gor Mahia Fixture
Ironically, Gor Mahia were not in action on the decisive day after the Sports Disputes Tribunal halted their scheduled clash against Mara Sugar due to a dispute over the match venue.
But even with the fixture postponed, Gor Mahia fans had every reason to celebrate as events in Kericho delivered the trophy straight into their hands with three matches still left to play.
Return to CAF Champions League
The championship victory also confirms Gor Mahia’s return to continental football, with the club set to represent Kenya once again in the CAF Champions League after missing out last season.
For the green army faithful, this latest triumph is more than just another trophy, it is a statement that K’Ogalo remain the undisputed kings of Kenyan football.
