Kenya’s most celebrated club, Gor Mahia, travel to Awendo Green Stadium this Sunday for a crucial FKF Premier League clash against Mara Sugar in a match that could officially crown K’Ogalo as the 2025/2026 league champions.
A victory for the 21-time champions would seal the title with one match still remaining against Nairobi United a fixture that would then turn into a coronation party for the Green Army faithful.
K’Ogalo currently sit comfortably at the top of the FKF Premier League table with 68 points, while fierce rivals AFC Leopards trail on 64 points after playing 32 matches out of the possible 34 league fixtures.
The stakes are massive in Awendo. Gor Mahia will step onto the pitch determined to finish the job and reclaim domestic supremacy, while Mara Sugar will be aiming to spoil the celebrations and pull off one of the biggest upsets of the season.
History, however, strongly favors the record champions.
Gor Mahia have dominated every meeting against Mara Sugar, winning all three FKF Premier League encounters and one domestic cup tie between the two sides. Their biggest statement came on April 27, 2025, during a league clash at Dandora Stadium where K’Ogalo demolished Mara Sugar 4-0.
On that memorable afternoon, Musa Shariff opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Enock Morrison doubled the advantage in the 24th minute. Gideon Bendeka added the third in the 55th minute before Alpha Onyango completed the rout with a late strike in the 90th minute.
Across all their league meetings, Gor Mahia have scored nine goals against Mara Sugar while keeping a perfect defensive record with zero goals conceded.
The only time Mara Sugar managed to find the back of the net against Gor Mahia was in the Charity Shield Cup on June 6, 2021, at Ruaraka Stadium, where K’Ogalo still emerged victorious with a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Tito Okello and Kenneth Muguna.
Now the big question remains: will Mara Sugar delay the inevitable, or are the Green Army already tailoring championship suits for the grand celebration?
All roads now lead to Awendo Green Stadium, where emotions, tension, and history await under the Sunday spotlight.
