Sunday promises to be a huge day for Kenyan football, as the biggest game climbs up the lush hills of Gusii land—the land of bananas, passion, and unmatched football energy.

Kenya’s most decorated football club, Gor Mahia, make a highly anticipated return to Kisii to face their once-feared rivals Shabana FC in KPL Matchday 14. This is not just another league fixture, it is a clash loaded with history, pride, and unfinished business.

A Rivalry with a Troubled Past

The last time these two sides met, the atmosphere turned hostile. What began as fan banter unfortunately escalated into physical confrontations, leaving several supporters injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. That dark episode remains fresh in the memories of many.

Ahead of this fixture, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) initially directed that the match be played at Kasarani Stadium, citing security concerns. However, Shabana strongly disputed the move, and after deliberations, the game was confirmed for Gusii Stadium, scheduled for Sunday, 11th January 2026.
FKF has since urged fans from both sides to play a pivotal role before, during, and after the match, calling for improved standards of conduct and the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The Battle on the Pitch

When it comes to football matters, Gor Mahia hold the upper hand. Since Shabana’s return to the top-tier league, the Tore Bores have never beaten K’Ogalo—managing only a few draws alongside several defeats.

Their most painful memory came at their own backyard, when Gor Mahia walked away with a narrow but devastating 1–0 victory. The decisive goal was scored by Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars defender Sylvester Owino, a moment that still haunts Shabana faithful.

How It Happened

In the 79th minute, Gor Mahia won a corner kick. Substitute Bryson Wangai stepped up to take it from the right side. As defenders focused on the obvious threats, Sylvester Owino quietly drifted to the far left, completely unmarked.

Almost unnoticed, by players and fans alike Owino timed his movement to perfection. Wangai delivered a beautifully weighted corner, and Owino met it with a low, precise header from a tight angle, sending the stadium into stunned silence on one side but rapture jubilation thee engulfed the Shabana Silence.

The celebration that followed was electric, one of those moments that live forever in Gor Mahia folklore.

What to Expect This Time

History suggests the same script may not be repeated. Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor is known for tactical surprises, and fans expect a new secret ingredient this time around.

Beyond pride, Gor Mahia have their eyes firmly on the top of the table, currently occupied by arch-rivals AFC Leopards. Victory in Kisii could shift momentum and intensify the title race.

Final Word

One thing is certain:

What happens in Kisii will remain in Kisii.

But for 90 minutes on Sunday, Gusii Stadium will be the centre of Kenyan football, where passion meets rivalry, and history waits to be rewritten.
