Following Gor Mahia’s frustrating 1-0 defeat against Bidco United in the SportPesa League held at Moi International Sports Center – Kasarani, head coach Charles Akonnor took the opportunity to dissect the team’s performance and share his thoughts on the match.

In his post-match remarks, the coach noted, “Overall, I felt our assessment was positive in terms of how we played. We showed good control over the game, dominating possession for large stretches and establishing a rhythm that we felt comfortable with.” However, he quickly acknowledged a glaring issue that has become a recurring theme in their matches: finishing. “What we lack is the ability to capitalize on the opportunities we create. When you dominate but fail to score, it becomes a significant challenge for any team.”

Delving deeper into the specifics, the coach elaborated, “While we did create several chances, we missed critical moments where a touch of magic could have changed the outcome. There were instances where we appeared hesitant in the final third, lacking the composure needed to turn those chances into goals.” He emphasized that this composure is crucial for converting opportunities against tightly contested opposition.

The coach also addressed the defensive lapses that contributed to the loss. “The only times Bidco seemed to threaten us were when we lost focus and carelessly gave the ball away, particularly in midfield. Our goalkeeper faced a couple of heavy moments as well, including a mis-kick that nearly led to a goal against us. It’s clear that we need to take more responsibility when we have possession.”

Despite the disappointing result, Akonnor remains optimistic about the team’s potential. “We will continue to build on the positive aspects of our play. There is a belief within the squad that if we address our finishing and the decisions made in crucial moments, we can turn our performances into results. Our focus now has to be on improving our efficiency in the final third as we prepare for our upcoming matches.”

The coach’s assessment offers a glimpse into the challenges ahead for Gor Mahia as they look to bounce back and secure valuable points in the league. Fans will undoubtedly be keen to see how the team responds in their next fixture.
