Gor Mahia head coach Zedekiah “Ziko” Otieno is feeling optimistic ahead of the 97th Mashemeji Derby, set to take place at the iconic Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.

During a press conference, the coach expressed confidence that his team will perform at their best in this significant match, which is noteworthy as it will be held for the first time in the hometown of the legendary Gor Wuod Ogalo, after whom the club is named.

“I believe it will be a great match and an excellent opportunity for us to close the gap with the league leaders. This is a very good chance for us,” Ziko stated.

He is delighted that the game will occur in Kanyamwa, the area where the name Gor Mahia originated. “Having the match played at our home ground is very positive, and it’s what derbies are meant to be. I think next time we should consider playing AFC Leopards in Kakamega, Busia, or Mumias,” he added.

With three games remaining, the defending champions are focused on turning their season around and finishing the FKF Premier League on a high note. Ziko emphasized the passion and winning mentality of K’Ogalo fans, urging them to come out and provide maximum support during this historic derby.

“For Gor Mahia, it’s always about winning. We are aware that our fans are very demanding. I ask them to support the team for the entire 90 minutes. In football, a goal can be scored at any time as long as the game isn’t over. I urge them not to lose hope, even if we are trailing. Their support is crucial until the final whistle,” he emphasized.

Currently, Gor Mahia has 53 points and sits in third place in the FKF Premier League, with one game in hand. The pressure to clinch the title is high, especially since league leaders Kenya Police FC need only a win to secure the championship. However, Ziko believes his players will put up a strong fight, regardless of the outcome.

“It’s important to accept all results with dignity because, in football, there are only three possible outcomes: a win, a loss, or a draw—unless it’s a knockout match,” the former Gor Mahia player explained.

The match is scheduled for Monday, June 2nd, just one day after the Madaraka Day celebrations at the same venue.
