FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia have been left disappointed as the much-anticipated season opener, the Community Shield Cup against Kenya Police FC has been canceled.

The match was set to take place at the Ulinzi Complex on August 11 but unforeseen issues related to venue availability forced the decision.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF), through officer Mike Kamure, overseeing Integrity, National Teams Projects & FKF-PL, communicated the cancellation to both clubs involved.

The federation cited significant difficulties in securing a venue that meets the necessary standards for such a high-profile match.

“This difficult decision has been necessitated by unforeseen challenges in securing a suitable venue to host the match. Despite our best efforts and extensive search, we have been unable to find a facility that meets the required standards for this prestigious fixture within the available timeframe,” the statement explained.

The cancellation comes as a setback to Gor Mahia, who were keen to kick off their season with a strong start in the domestic cup.

However, the team remains focused on their upcoming commitments.

Gor Mahia have since released a statement expressing determination amidst the setback.

“While we are disappointed about the Community Shield, our eyes are now firmly set on the Champions League preliminary round against El-Merriekh SC-Bentiu in Juba, South Sudan next week,” it reads.

In addition to their CAF Champions League preparations, Gor Mahia’s management is exploring alternative matches to keep their team competitive.

One such possibility is facing Fountain Gate FC on Tanzanite Day, which will be celebrated on August 9, 2024, in Tanzania.

“The hosts have expressed interest in playing against the Kenyan champions, and we are considering this as a valuable opportunity to prepare our squad,” said a senior team official.

The cancellation is a blow to both teams, who were keen to kick off their season with a victory in the traditional curtain-raiser, contested by the winners of the league and the FKF Cup from the previous season.

K’Ogalo successfully defended their league title while the Law Enforcers claimed the FKF Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over KCB.
