Gor Mahia take on Sofapaka in league tie

Gor Mahia returns to local football action when they face off with in-form Sofapaka on Sunday at Afraha Stadium (Nakuru) from 3pm.

Having lost their mid-week CAF Confederations Cup tie away in Angola, Gor Mahia will be keen to notch a victory as they up the pressure on the league pacesetters.

Gor Mahia versus Sofapaka has in the past produced some feisty ties but Gor Mahia has always had the edge, winning nine of their 20 league features while drawing eight and only losing thrice and scoring 23 goals in the process while conceding 14.

George Odhiambo ‘Blackberry’ scored Gor Mahia’s first goal in this fixture, a 1-2 loss in April 2009 and has since gone on to score 3 goals for K’Ogalo in this tie, the most by any Gor Mahia player.

In their last league meeting, Gor Mahia whitewashed the ‘Batoto Ba Mungu’ 3-0 in Narok with goals by Joachim Oluoch, Innocent Wafula and Sammy Onyango, having previously drawn the first leg tie 3-3 in Machakos earlier in the year.

Gor Mahia will be seeking to stop Sofapaka’s impressive five game winning streak that has seen them climb to third on the log with 23 points.

A win for Gor Mahia will be their fifth win in six games and will see them move up to 25 points and leapfrog Sofapaka in the process. Gor are currently fourth with 22 points with two games in hand over both Sofapaka and league leaders Mathare United.
