Gor Mahia’s milestones in continental football

Gor Mahia begin their continental journey on Wednesday with a home fixture against Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets at Kasarani stadium. As fans gear up for the match, here is a reminder on some of the milestones in Gor’s continental journey over the years.

In facing Nyasa Big Bullets, Gor Mahia will be facing their 46th opponent in continental competitions. This will be the second team from Malawi they will be facing in a continental competition – having previously faced Yamaha Wanderers in the CAF Champions Cup in 1977.

Malawi was Gor Mahia’s third destination in their continental competition sojourn – having previously toured Sudan and Egypt in 1969. KÓgalo have since played across 30 African countries – the latest being their trip to Algeria last season.

It does not look like any player will soon be equaling Peter Dawo’s record – 14 goals for the club in continental competition. However, Jacques Tuyisenge (4) and Ephraim Guikan (3) will have opportunities to match Andrew Obunga’s seven goals and Allan Thigo’s six goals should Gor perform well in the competition this year.

Last season, Gor Mahia reached a century of goals in CAF competitions. Since William Ouma ‘Chege’ scored the club’s debut goal in Sudan in 1969, K’Ogalo has amassed 112 goals in the competition – the last goal coming from Jacques Tuyisenge in Algeria against USM Algers.

George Odhiambo and Haroun Shakava have appeared more than 20 times for the club in continental competition in recent times making them the club’s most seasoned players in the competition. Boniface Oluoch has made 14 appearances.

Gor Mahia remain the only club in Kenya to have won a continental title to date, and have played in two finals. It also became the first club from Kenya to qualify for group stages since the tournaments adopted the groups format.
