Blow to Gor Mahia as CAF Disciplinary Board imposes financial sanction

Gor Mahia has been dealt a blow as CAF Disciplinary Board fines the club 5,000 dollars (Sh 500,000) for fans unsporting behaviour during the Caf Confederation Cup match against Rayon Sports at Kasarani.

A letter stating the reason for the fine and amount was sent to Gor Mahia this evening with the window for an appeal being given by the Disciplinary Hearing of the Association’s Board Members.

“In the meeting held in Caf Headquaters in Cairo, Egypt on 8th September, the board examined all documents… the officials indicated in their reports that : “the spectators were good until the second goal of Rayon Sport, when they – Gor Mahia’s supporters threw bottles and other objects at the players…” stated part of the letter.

“The CAF Disciplinary Board decided to impose upon your club a financial sanction of 5,000 dollars for unsporting and offensive behaviours of your supporters,” continued the letter.

The club has three days to announce their intentions to appeal the decision and Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier says they will see how well to go about it.

“We will examine the decision and weigh out options well then decide if we will announce our intention to appeal,” Rachier told the official Gor Mahia website.

The chairman added: “lt’s quite unfortunate and we appeal to our fans to always refrain from such behaviours even in the face of provocation because the consequences are always heavy like in this case.”

The club’s CEO also noted that fans avoid any behaviour that can cost the club. We witnessed maturity during our defeat to Thika United. That’s what we would like to see because this is just a sport we should accept any outcome,” said Aduda.

The same sentiments were echoed by treasurer Sally Bolo: “A section of our fans should learn how to handle themselves. Some of their actions are costly like right now, the money to be paid to CAF as a fine could have been used to sort out other bills in club.”

In the same Group, Rayon Sport and USM Alger were also fined previously for the chaos that erupted in their second leg match in Algeria.

Let them deduct it from what’s due then give us the rest.

Rayon fans had a stand reserved for them but they chose to bring their loud drums right in the midst of Gor fans. Looked to me like provocation on their part.
