Gor Mahia fought back from behind to earn a dramatic 1-1 draw against Kenya Police FC in a fiercely contested Serikali Derby staged at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday evening.

The encounter began at a slow pace, with both sides approaching the match cautiously, seemingly wary of conceding an early goal in such a high-stakes title clash.

However, Police gradually grew into the contest around the 15th minute as midfield duo Charles Ouma and Asante Nana started dominating the midfield battle against Alpha Onyango and Jackson Dwang’.

The Law Enforcers threatened first in the 20th minute when Aboud Omar blasted over the bar from a free-kick after Hernest Malonga was brought down in a dangerous area.

Police would not wait long to capitalize on their momentum as they grabbed the opener in the 22nd minute through Brian Odhiambo, popularly known as Chonjo, after he reacted quickest to a loose ball following a failed clearance inside Gor Mahia’s box.

The goal sparked Gor Mahia into life, with K’Ogalo launching wave after wave of attacks in search of an equalizer. However, Samuel Kapen and Shariff Musa failed to make their chances count.

The 21-time league champions came agonizingly close to leveling matters in the 45th minute when Ebenezer Adukwaw connected well with a header, only for Police goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo to produce a brilliant save and push the ball away for a corner.

Gor Mahia returned from the break with increased intensity and almost found the equalizer in the 49th minute, but Mike Kibwage fired his effort over the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Ogembo was shown a yellow card for time wasting as the tension inside Nyayo continued to rise.

Adukwaw would then waste another golden chance in the 57th minute after heading wide from close range as Gor Mahia continued piling pressure on Police’s defense.

Just when it looked like Police would walk away with all three points, Gor Mahia finally broke through in the 86th minute. The move began with a brilliant run from Shariff Musa down the left flank before his delivery caused confusion inside the Police penalty area. The loose ball eventually fell kindly to substitute Ebenezer Assifuah, who controlled calmly before smashing a low shot beyond Ogembo to rescue a crucial point for K’Ogalo.

While the draw was not the perfect outcome for Gor Mahia, the point stretched their lead at the top of the league standings to seven points with only three matches left to play, keeping them firmly on course for another league title.
