Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has praised his players’ mentality and composure following their hard-fought 2–1 victory over Mathare United at Nyayo National Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Akonnor admitted the clash was far from straightforward, crediting Mathare United for pushing his side to the limit.
“It was a tough game, and I was really impressed with how our opponents played. We had to dig deep, but we managed to come through in the second half,” said Akonnor.
The win stretched Gor Mahia FC’s lead at the top of the table to nine points, but the experienced tactician was quick to play down any talk of the title race being decided.
“A nine-point gap is good, but we have to stay focused — it’s not over yet. We need to keep believing in ourselves,” he added.
Akonnor also highlighted the growing maturity within his squad, noting how the players continue to respond positively under pressure.
“The boys have handled everything well and have shown great maturity in how they process and respond to challenges.”
With momentum firmly on their side, Gor Mahia will now turn their attention to maintaining consistency as the season enters a decisive phase.
