The iconic Nyayo National Stadium was awash with a palpable sense of nostalgia and reverence as fans gathered for the much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

The match, held on a day of significant emotional weight, served not only as a sporting event but as a heartfelt tribute to Kenya’s beloved political icon and Gor Mahia Patron, the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on October 15th, 2025.

The phrase “The King is gone, Long live the crown” echoed in the hearts of many as fans reflected on Odinga’s immense legacy, both in politics and sports. His unwavering support for Gor Mahia and dedication to uplifting Kenyan football had cemented his place as a cherished figure in the sporting community.

Prior to kick-off, a poignant one-minute silence was observed, allowing the crowd to pay their respects. Fans, players, and officials alike took a moment to remember Baba, affectionately known to them.

A seat was meticulously reserved in his honor, adorned with his iconic cap and the now-famous jersey number 80, symbolizing the years he touched lives and inspired countless individuals.

Sally Bolo, the Vice Chair of Gor Mahia, took center stage, reiterating the importance of maintaining Odinga’s legacy. “His spirit lives on in every match we play and every victory we achieve. We will ensure that his seat remains present at every home game as a constant reminder of his love for this club and what it represents,” she stated, eliciting applause from the emotional crowd.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with passionate fans displaying their unwavering loyalty to both their teams and to the memory of Odinga. As the match progressed, the spirit of sportsmanship prevailed, with both sets of players reflecting the values Odinga had championed throughout his life. This day was not just about the rivalry on the field, but also about unity, respect, and the shared love for the game.

Following the match, which ended in a 1-0 loss to the home team, Gor Mahia, discussions of Odinga’s potential financial support for both clubs in such instances resurfaced among the fans. His commitment to promoting sports, irrespective of the outcome, demonstrated a level of generosity and love that many in the stadium fondly recalled.

As the fans trickled out of the stadium, chants honoring Odinga echoed into the night, a vivid reminder that the K’Ogalo family, and indeed the entire Kenyan football fraternity, will continue to celebrate the life of a man who was not just a political leader, but an enduring symbol of hope and inspiration.

In the years to come, Raila Odinga’s legacy will surely remain woven into the fabric of Kenyan football, cherished by all who wear the green and white of Gor Mahia. The Mashemeji Derby may have concluded, but the memories of Baba’s contributions will forever resonate in the hearts and minds of footballers and fans alike.
