In a thought-provoking post-match analysis, Gor Mahia’s attacking midfielder, Austin Odhiambo, shared his insights on what Kenyan football can learn from Tanzania following a friendly match against the renowned Simba SC.

The encounter, held at the bustling Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, ended in a 0-2 defeat for Gor Mahia, but it opened a dialogue about the vibrant football culture in Tanzania.

Odhiambo emphasized the significant role fans play in shaping the atmosphere of a football match. He expressed admiration for the passionate supporters who filled the stadium, creating an electrifying environment even for a friendly match.

“The turnout was incredible. Tanzanian fans give the game the hype it needs, making it so much more interesting. This is what we are missing in Kenya, particularly in our local leagues,” he remarked.

Highlighting the impact that a strong fan presence can have, Odhiambo added, “When fans fill the stadiums for matches, it’s a game-changer. It inspires us as players, and I believe we can achieve this in Kenya too.” His words resonate as a call to action for enhancing the spectacle of local football by rallying community support.

Aside from reflecting on the game, Odhiambo also used the opportunity to reconnect with his long-time friend and fellow national team player, Mohammed Bajaber. The friendship, evident in their interactions, was further exemplified when Bajaber gifted Odhiambo a memento, a gesture symbolizing their enduring bond formed during their time with the Harambee Stars.

While addressing rumors regarding a potential move to Simba SC, Odhiambo clarified, “I’ve never been linked to Simba. If it’s in God’s plan for me to play at this club, then it will happen at the right time.” His focus remains firmly on lifting Gor Mahia, as he sets his sights on clinching the league title for the upcoming 2025/26 season, especially after finishing as runners-up to Kenya Police FC last season.

Odhiambo’s reflections not only shed light on the challenges facing Kenyan football but also inspire a vision for growth through fan engagement and community support, aspects that could revolutionize the sport in the region.
