Former Gor Mahia defender Alphonse Omija has embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Club Etoile Sportive du Sahel, widely referred to as ES Sahel, a prominent club based in Sousse, Tunisia.
The 22-year-old right-back was recently in camp with the Harambe Stars, Kenya’s national team, preparing for an upcoming fixture against Seychelles. However, his ambitions took precedence when the opportunity to secure a contract with ES Sahel arose.
Harambe Stars head coach Benni McCarthy confirmed the transition, emphasizing the importance of the move for Omija’s professional growth.
“We had Alphonce Omija leaving the camp. I okayed it because it was an opportunity to join a club in Tunisia,” McCarthy stated.
“He has left the camp to travel to Tunisia. The transfer window was closing, and we decided to help him get the medicals, as failing would have seen the move fall through. He left yesterday to travel to Tunisia.”
Omija’s departure is a testament to the growing recognition of Kenyan talent on the international stage. As he gears up to don the colors of ES Sahel, fans and observers alike are eager to see how this promising defender will adapt to the competitive landscape of Tunisian football.
His move marks not just a personal milestone but also highlights the potential for more Kenyan players to make their mark abroad.
