In a heartfelt visit aimed at uplifting the spirits of former football star Martin Imbalambala, Hon. Eliud Owalo, the Deputy Patron of Gor Mahia and Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President of Kenya, paid a visit to the ailing ex-captain of AFC Leopards.

The meeting took place at Imbalambala’s home in Hamza, Nairobi, where the two engaged in a candid discussion about the challenges faced by athletes, particularly those dealing with disabilities.

Martin Imbalambala, a former midfielder for the Harambee Stars, once stood as a towering figure in Kenyan football, known for his skill, leadership, and contributions to the sport. Sadly, his promising career was cut short in 2018 when he suffered from a rare eye condition that led to irreversible loss of eyesight. Since then, the sports community has rallied around him to provide support and recognition for his achievements.

During the visit, Owalo, accompanied by notable figures from Kenyan football including AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars legends Josephat Murila “Controller”, Mickey Weche “T9”, and Mike Amwayi, engaged in deeply reflective conversations with Imbalambala.

They discussed not only the emotional and physical challenges that he has faced but also the broader concerns regarding the welfare of retired sportsmen and women, especially those with disabilities.

The discussions highlighted the urgent need for a sustainable framework to honor and empower Kenya’s sports legends throughout their lives.

Owalo emphasized his commitment to advocating for policies and initiatives that ensure athletes like Imbalambala are not forgotten and continue to receive support even after their careers end.

“Martin’s resilience is truly inspiring,” he stated. “His story serves as a reminder of the essential role we have in helping our sporting icons. It is time we engage all stakeholders to ensure their contributions to our nation are recognized and valued,” Owalo explained.

The visit underscored the importance of community support and the need for collaboration among duty bearers to enhance the livelihoods of athletes living with disabilities.

Hon. Owalo’s commitment to this cause signals a potential shift in how former athletes are treated within the broader context of Kenyan society.

As Martin Imbalambala continues to navigate his personal challenges, his story remains a beacon of hope and a call to action for all those involved in the sports industry to prioritize the welfare of their champions, ensuring they live with dignity and respect long after they leave the pitch.
