Akonnor, who once proudly donned the jersey of the Ghana Black Stars, has made invaluable contributions to the advancement of football in Ghana, both on the field and from the sidelines.
Born on March 12, 1974, in Nungua, a vibrant suburb of Accra, Akonnor’s journey in football began in the grassroots sector, nurturing his skills through local clubs. His remarkable ascent through the ranks has seen him managing some of the most prestigious teams, both in Ghana and internationally.
Akonnor’s coaching career gained significant traction when he took the reins at Asante Kotoko SC, leading the club to the group stage of the CAF Champions League in 2019. This achievement marked a pivotal moment for the team, particularly since it had previously faced challenges on the continental stage.
Before this success, Akonnor had already made a name for himself by securing the Ghana Special Normalization League Trophy with Asante Kotoko, establishing a winning culture that resonated with the club’s passionate fan base.
His impressive track record earned him recognition at the national level, leading to his appointment as the assistant head coach for the Ghana National Team, popularly known as the Black Stars. Currently serving as the Technical Director at Accra Athletic Football Club, he has been pivotal in overseeing the growth of players from the U13 to U17 levels, facilitating their transition to the senior squad and other prominent premier league clubs throughout Ghana.
Akonnor’s managerial portfolio features roles at several esteemed clubs, including the likes of Hearts of Oak, AshGold FC, and Dreams FC, each of which has benefited from his expertise.
Among his numerous accolades, he was honored as the 2018/2019 Coach of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards, recognizing his impactful work in shaping competitive teams. Additionally, he led AshGold to an impressive second-place finish in the Premier League, further establishing his reputation as a formidable tactician.
