Former Ghana international and highly respected football coach Charles Akonnor is poised to take the helm as the new head coach of Gor Mahia, one of the most storied football clubs in Kenya.

Akonnor, who once proudly donned the jersey of the Ghana Black Stars, has made invaluable contributions to the advancement of football in Ghana, both on the field and from the sidelines.

Born on March 12, 1974, in Nungua, a vibrant suburb of Accra, Akonnor’s journey in football began in the grassroots sector, nurturing his skills through local clubs. His remarkable ascent through the ranks has seen him managing some of the most prestigious teams, both in Ghana and internationally.

Akonnor’s coaching career gained significant traction when he took the reins at Asante Kotoko SC, leading the club to the group stage of the CAF Champions League in 2019. This achievement marked a pivotal moment for the team, particularly since it had previously faced challenges on the continental stage.

Before this success, Akonnor had already made a name for himself by securing the Ghana Special Normalization League Trophy with Asante Kotoko, establishing a winning culture that resonated with the club’s passionate fan base.

His impressive track record earned him recognition at the national level, leading to his appointment as the assistant head coach for the Ghana National Team, popularly known as the Black Stars. In February 2020, he was elevated to the position of head coach, an honor that came with the responsibility of steering one of Africa’s most iconic teams.

During his tenure, Akonnor played a crucial role in leading the Black Stars to qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, further solidifying the team’s standing in African football. Additionally, he was instrumental in guiding the squad to secure a spot in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, a highly coveted achievement that showcased his ability to motivate and develop players on the international stage.

Akonnor’s coaching philosophy is rooted in an attacking style of play that emphasizes creativity, dynamic movement, and possession-based football, all while ensuring a solid defensive structure. These principles harmonize with the philosophy of Gor Mahia FC, where he aims to implement training camps that will enhance the coaching experiences for both players and fellow coaches alike.

With a wealth of experience that encompasses stints at prominent European clubs and a commitment to youth development through the Right to Dream academy in Ghana, Akonnor has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to nurturing the next generation of football talent.

Currently serving as the Technical Director at Accra Athletic Football Club, he has been pivotal in overseeing the growth of players from the U13 to U17 levels, facilitating their transition to the senior squad and other prominent premier league clubs throughout Ghana.

Akonnor’s managerial portfolio features roles at several esteemed clubs, including the likes of Hearts of Oak, AshGold FC, and Dreams FC, each of which has benefited from his expertise.

Among his numerous accolades, he was honored as the 2018/2019 Coach of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards, recognizing his impactful work in shaping competitive teams. Additionally, he led AshGold to an impressive second-place finish in the Premier League, further establishing his reputation as a formidable tactician.

Charles Akonnor’s remarkable journey from a gifted player to a transformative coach highlights his profound passion for football, steadfast commitment to talent development, and tireless dedication to the evolution of

Ghanaian football, both at the national level and within club competitions. His appointment at Gor Mahia represents an exciting new chapter in his distinguished career and promises to bring innovative strategies to the club’s ambitious goals.
