Sylvester Owino Ahono was the hero, scoring the key goal that helped reigning champions Gor Mahia clinch a tough 1-0 win over Shabana FC. It was an intense and thrilling match at Gusii Stadium, and this victory really boosts their chances of retaining the FKF Premier League title.

This clash, known as the “Nyanza Derby,” carried significant implications, not only for league standings but also for local pride. Tensions between the two sets of fans escalated before the scheduled 2 PM kickoff, leading to a 42-minute delay. This unrest was sparked by disagreements over the allocation of seating sections in the stadium, which has a capacity of 12,000. Unfortunately, the situation turned violent, resulting in several fans sustaining serious injuries.

After a tense wait, calm was finally restored, and at 2:38 PM EAT, the players stepped onto the pitch, eager to compete in front of a passionate crowd.

From the outset, the match was characterized by fierce physicality as both teams sought to assert their dominance. Gor Mahia’s goalkeeper, Gad Matthews, quickly found himself tested, making crucial saves to fend off a determined Shabana side that was hungry for victory and eager to impress their home fans. Darius Msagha was particularly active, unleashing a powerful low shot that Matthews expertly stopped. He later had to parry a dangerous cross that threatened to turn the game in Shabana’s favor.

As the match progressed, Gor Mahia was unable to generate significant offensive threats, relying heavily on their defensive capabilities to maintain parity at halftime. The tension was palpable in the stadium, with both teams aware of the stakes involved.

During the second half, each team made two tactical substitutions, hoping to break the deadlock. The physical confrontations that marked the previous period resurfaced, adding to the drama on the pitch.

The pivotal moment of the match arrived in the 79th minute when substitute Bryson Wangai delivered a beautifully taken corner kick from the left side. The ball found an unmarked Sylvester Owino,

Ahono expertly detached himself from the pack near the penalty area, gliding toward the far corner of the field with stealthy precision. As the play unfolded, Bryson Wangaya delivered a perfectly weighted corner kick that found Ouma completely unmarked. With a keen eye and calm composure, he steadied himself, picked his target, and sent the ball soaring into the back of the net. The Shabana goalkeeper, caught off guard, could only watch in disbelief as Ouma celebrated, adding yet another layer of frustration for the Kisii-based side.

who rose above the defenders to head the ball into the net, past goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili. The goal ignited a furious reaction from the home fans, who perceived it as an injustice. Their anger led to another delay, as they protested extensively on the sidelines, forcing a stoppage of about 10 minutes before the game could resume in the first minute of added time.

However, shortly after play resumed, another stoppage occurred with just one minute left in regulation time, this time lasting an astonishing 21 minutes. The atmosphere was tense, with uncertainty looming over whether the game could be completed smoothly.

After an intense and chaotic conclusion, centre referee Israel Mpaima finally brought the match to a close after an extended total of 115 minutes of play. Despite the turmoil and controversies, Gor Mahia emerged victorious, further asserting their credentials in the league and securing a vital three points. What an unforgettable encounter!
