One of the biggest matches in KPL history is happening this Sunday, with Shabana FC taking on Gor Mahia at Gusi Stadium for the 28th FKF Premier League clash.
The match is expected to be intense, as both teams are in the title race. Shabana is sitting in fourth place with 46 points, while K’Ogalo is in third with 50 points, just two points behind the league leaders, Kenya Police.
Shabana, back in the top tier after 22024, has faced K’Ogalo three times before, with the defending champs winning two and drawing one.
Looking back, the clubs met in July 1985 at City Stadium, where K’Ogalo won 3-1, thanks to goals from George Onyango “Fundi,” Hesbon Omollo, and Gideon Hamisi, while Ashabana managed to score once.
This upcoming match, set for Saturday, May 3, is buzzing on social media, with fans concerned about whether Gusii Stadium can handle the large crowd expected for both teams.
However, Shabana FC Secretary General Elizaphan Kerama has put those relocation rumors to rest, saying they won’t move the game to Nairobi due to safety or crowd capacity worries.
“I want to assure our fans that the match will stay put. We have a great home ground, and we’ve hosted big teams like AFC Leopards here without any issues. We’re looking forward to having Gor Mahia in May,” Kerama said.
K’Ogalo just played on Thursday in the Mozzart Bet Cup quarter-finals against Kariobangi Sharks, winning 2-0. The Mihic squad is feeling confident and ready to take on Shabana at their home ground.
If K’Ogalo wins, they’ll bump up to 53 points and get closer to the top of the table, depending on how Kenya Police and Tusker FC do.
