Gor Mahia’s hopes to top the league table dented by Sofapaka

Gor Mahia’s dreams of ascending to the pinnacle of the FKF Premier League were dealt a setback as they settled for a frustrating 1-1 draw against Sofapaka at the bustling Dandora Stadium.

K’Ogalo found themselves just moments away from grasping the top spot for the first time this season, having fought valiantly to maintain a narrow lead over their opponents. As the match drew closer to its conclusion, the tension in the air was palpable, with fans eagerly anticipating a celebration. The fourth official raised the board to indicate injury time, casting a shadow of uncertainty over their hopes.

Earlier in the 67th minute, Gor Mahia’s forward Joshua manoeuvred into open space within the penalty area. With remarkable composure, he struck the ball with precision, sending it past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Olak. This goal, a result of a beautifully coordinated passing sequence among the teammates, allowed Gor Mahia to seize a well-deserved lead in the game.

Tragically for the Gor Mahia faithful, substitute Douglas ‘Moi’ Kibet shattered their aspirations in the first minute of stoppage time. With a deft touch, he found the back of the net, sending the vibrant home crowd into stunned silence. The fans, who had leaped to their feet, ready to erupt in joyous celebration, were suddenly deflated.

Kibet’s goal was crafted by a stunning cutback from Edward Omondi, whose remarkable footwork allowed him to glide past two defenders along the right flank. With precision and flair, Omondi delivered the perfect ball to Kibet, who skillfully guided it into the far corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Gad Mathews stranded and helpless as he watched the ball slip away into the depths of the goal.

The draw keeps Gor Mahia anchored in second place with 47 points, just two shy of the elusive top position. Having witnessed Kenya Police’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Ulinzi Stars, the opportunity had been ripe for Gor to seize the moment. While the result extends Gor Mahia’s unbeaten streak, it also underscores their relentless pursuit of the top spot, a crown that has been fiercely contested between Tusker FC and Kenya Police throughout the season.
