Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has sparked a discussion regarding player availability for Kenya’s World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon, specifically mentioning Gor Mahia and Tusker FC.

Following Kenya’s recent match against Gabon, McCarthy took the opportunity to clarify his squad selection process, noting that it was guided by the players who were available to him at that time, as other clubs were focused on the local league schedule.

“The players I chose were those who were available during that period,” McCarthy explained. “Gor Mahia and Tusker sought permission to retain their players, and we were accommodating. However, I am unable to select players I haven’t had the chance to observe in matches, which is why they were not included in the squad.” McCarthy said during a post-match interview at Nyayo National Stadium.

In response, Gor Mahia CEO Raymond Oruo respectfully addressed McCarthy’s remarks, emphasizing that the club adhered to the established regulations regarding player releases. Oruo noted that Gor Mahia players were promptly made available after their match against Bandari.

“The coach and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) are fully aware of the guidelines that govern player releases for international duties,” Oruo stated. “It is important that all clubs are treated equally under these regulations.”

He also highlighted that McCarthy had the opportunity to assess Gor Mahia’s players during a league match against Kariobangi Sharks.

“Our players were accessible immediately following the Bandari game. If the coach decided they were not needed for this match, we respect that decision, as he had the opportunity to evaluate them in a competitive context,” Oruo added.

Seven players from Gor Mahia had been called up to join the national team, Harambee Stars, as they prepared for crucial matches against Gambia and Gabon on March 20 and March 24, respectively.

The players included Austin Odhiambo, last season’s FKF Premier League MVP, right-back Ronney Onyango, Sylvester Owino, Alphonce Omija, Lawrence Juma; Ben Stanley Omondi; and Alpha Onyango. However, only Stanley Omondi and Ronney Onyango were available for selection for McCarthy’s World Cup qualifying team.

Despite the ongoing dialogue, Oruo reiterated Gor Mahia’s unwavering commitment to supporting the national team.
