Mihic vows to improve after the win against Mathare.

Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has provided a critical assessment of his first match in charge, expressing dissatisfaction with his team’s performance despite securing a 2-1 victory over Mathare United in the FKF Premier League on Saturday at Dandora Stadium.

Mathare United took an early lead in the 16th minute when Elli Asieche capitalized on a lapse in Gor Mahia’s defense. However, defender Alphonce Omija responded in the 35th minute, leveling the score and ensuring both teams went into halftime even.

In the second half, Ghanaian midfielder Enock Morrison converted a penalty in the 76th minute, ultimately securing all three points for K’Ogalo. Despite the win, Mihic was critical of his team’s overall performance, citing tactical lapses and missed opportunities as areas of concern.

“In that kind of pitch, where the ball bounces too much, it’s very difficult. You must play more vertical football, which we did after making some changes with fresh players,” Mihic said in his post-match interview with Azam TV.

“I am not satisfied with some minor tactical issues. In the first half, we allowed them into our half and conceded a goal. We wanted to maintain possession, but we overcomplicated things,” Mihic noted.

“We needed to push up with a midfielder to relieve pressure, play more vertically, and connect better in support. We missed too many chances, which made us nervous,” he added.

Mihic acknowledged the importance of securing a win but emphasized the need for improvement. “Now that I have seen my team in a real game, I know more than before. However, once again, winning is always good. Three points are important. We need to be pleased but also correct our mistakes,” he concluded.

The victory brought Gor Mahia’s points total to 34, placing them behind joint league leaders Kenya Police and Tusker FC, both with 38 points. As the league enters a decisive period, Mihic will be keen to address his team’s shortcomings and push for a stronger title challenge.
