Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla has his sights set firmly on victory in the upcoming Mashemeji derby against longstanding rivals AFC Leopards, to be held this Sunday, April 21 at Nyayo National Stadium.
The 95th edition of Kenya’s most celebrated football rivalry promises an electrifying clash as the two top-flight giants come face to face once again.
Gor Mahia, currently leading the FKF Premier League with 54 points, are looking to extend their dominance, while AFC Leopards, positioned eighth with 38 points aim to disrupt their rivals’ streak and climb higher in the standings.
“We are well-prepared and taking each match one at a time. We are excited to play in the derby,” Beson Omalla.
The derby not only offers a chance to secure bragging rights but also critical points as the season progresses.
“It is a big game, but I am not under any pressure because I want to score and add to my tally,” he noted.
Omala, who leads the league’s top scorers with 12 goals, is a key player for K’Ogalo as they aim to retain the league title.
His closest competitor Tito Okelo from Kenya Police FC trails with ten goals.
The striker’s performance in the upcoming derby could be pivotal in determining the fate of Gor Mahia’s season.
Rivalry between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards dates back to their first encounter on May 5, 1968.
Over the years, both teams have had their share of victories and losses, adding layers to their fierce competition.
Gor Mahia have emerged as champions 20 times while Leopards have claimed the title 12 times.
“Our team is aiming to win this game as we continue our quest to retain the league,” he concluded.
