Media Watch: Kakamega Homeboyz deserve the win – McKinstry

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has conceded that their Wednesday Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) opponents Kakamega Homeboyz deserved the victory.

K’Ogalo were stunned by Homeboyz, who took home three points following a 3-2 victory at Kasarani. This was one of the crucial matches of the season, given that Gor Mahia were destined to win the league if they had won and Tusker dropped points against Posta Rangers.

But they ended up on the losing end as Homeboyz fought back to win the duel deep in stoppage time.

“When you score three goals, you deserve it,” McKinstry said after the match.

“We were a little off; the passing was snappy enough, and it is something that we must get right against City Stars because the league is in our hands.

“We came into the game and we had something to lose, Homeboyz did not have something to lose. If they had lost this game, it was not going to be demanding for them. They could play with freshness.”

The former Rwanda and Uganda national teams coach quickly shifted his focus to the final day game against Nairobi City Stars.

“If we pick up the three points on Sunday, then we are champions, and on Sunday, it is going to be a cup final,”.

“If you win, you are going to have it, and if you do not, then the chance is not yours to win. It is very clear now.

“It is now about recovery and getting ready for the City Stars game. We will give it everything we can and get the three points.”

The Premier League took a break due to the FIFA international break, and McKinstry said that presented them with a challenge.

“The guys were a little bit off. But we moved the ball a little well, but the response was not that punchy. We had two weeks of international break, and when you come back, it is challenging,” he concluded.

“But there is no doubt; if anyone tells you that the players played under no stress, they are lying to you. Even the top players have stress, but it is whether you can thrive under that stress.”
