Media watch: McKinstry focusing on youthful players

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has asked his young players to improve on their physicality.

K’Ogalo is set to witness a number of young players in their squad in the coming season after promotion from the youth team with the club currently serving a transfer ban from FIFA.

McKinstry, who was appointed to take over the reins from Andreas Spier who left at the end of the season, asked his budding players to improve on their physicality.

“We have had to promote a lot of young guys from the youth team over the last few months because of the transfer embargo the club is currently serving.

Some of the young players in our squad have to get used to the physicality of the league,” said the former Uganda Cranes head coach.

Gor Mahia’s preseason has been hampered by financial issues after a number of their players downed their tools which led to them pulling out of the Elite Preseason Cup and a friendly against Police.

Having watched the fledgling talents, McKinstry admitted that youth football is no match compared to senior tournaments which has led to the young players taking time to adapt.

“Youth football tends to be less physical, some of them have struggled in the first few friendlies that we played as our opponents dominated them physically,” added McKinstry.
