Kenyatta Stadium to host first Mashemeji Derby

Kenyan most celebrated club Gor Mahia FC will host their archrivals AFC Leopards at Kenyatta Stadium – Mambolei on Kisum on 8th May 2022 in one of the most talked-about derbies in the continent.

This has been confirmed by the club’s Secretary-General, Sam Ochola. Ocholla explained why they preferred the 30,000-capacity facility that was recently renovated and opened for public use in 2021.

“As the club’s top brass, we have reached a decision that we will host AFC Leopards in Kisumu at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Momboleo. The team will start camping in the region after our game against Kariobangi Sharks on May 1,” Ochola explained.

The venue was arrived at after the club was banned from main sports arenas in the country due to crowd trouble.

“The club is currently serving a ban on hosting its matches in Nairobi, and since this is the biggest game of the season, we have brought it to Kisumu, where the club enjoys fanatical support so that they can also feel part of the team. We also hope to cash in on a huge turnout.” Ochola added.

With self-belief of currently being on form, AFC Leopards also known as Ingwe are vowing to break the jinx since February 2016 when they beat K’Ogalo at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani. Since then, Ingwe’s closest positive achievement against K’Ogalo has been a draw.

K’Ogalo on the other side who will first meet Kariobangi Sharks this Sunday at Thika  Municipal Stadium are ready for the challenge and will do their best to maintain their winning spree against the Leopards. They are meeting Kariobangi sharks this Sunday.

K’Ogalo fans have been urged to turn out in large numbers to support the team. The kick-off time is set to 3.00 P.M.
