Gor Mahia secured a vital three points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz in a fiercely contested FKF Premier League match played at Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday.
The encounter, delayed slightly at kick-off, lived up to expectations as both sides displayed intensity and attacking intent from the onset. Despite a bright start and several promising moves from either end, the first half ended goalless, with neither side able to convert their chances.
Gor Mahia’s best early opportunity fell to Musa Shariff, whose effort sailed over the bar after good build-up play involving Alpha Onyango and Austin Odhiambo. Patrick Essombe also tested the Homeboyz goalkeeper, but his shot was well handled.
At the other end, Kakamega Homeboyz threatened from distance, but goalkeeper Gad Mathews Omondi remained composed, dealing effectively with shots on target to keep the scores level.
The second half saw Gor Mahia make tactical adjustments, introducing Ebenezer Assifuah before later bringing on Ben Stanley Omondi and Enock Morrison Kapen to add fresh impetus. The changes injected urgency into Gor Mahia’s attack as they pushed for a breakthrough.
With the match seemingly headed for a draw, sustained pressure from Gor Mahia finally paid off in the closing stages. A dangerous attacking sequence forced a defensive error from the hosts, resulting in an own goal that handed K’Ogalo the decisive lead in the 90th minute.
Moments later, the heavens opened, but that did little to dampen the spirits of the travelling supporters, who celebrated passionately in the rain as the final whistle confirmed an important away victory.
