This past weekend, the football fraternity came together to bid a final farewell to Mike Adede, popularly known as “Okoyeba,” as he was laid to rest in Mban Village, Ligega, Ugenya County. The funeral drew players, legends, and fans alike, all united to honour a man whose versatility and style left an indelible mark on Kenyan football.

Among those in attendance were some of the country’s most celebrated football personalities: Charles Namudeche, legendary Kenya Breweries and Harambee Stars goalkeeper Thomas Omboko Enoka, a renowned AFC Leopards speedster

The Gor Mahia legends who honoured him included Isaiah Omondi (Tiap), Mike Ojah Otieno, John Bobby Ogola (“The Six Million Dollar Man”), George Onyango (Fundi), Charles Owino (KPA), Nelson Ogola (Obota), Ignace Onyango (Khaduli), and Jared Ochieng.

Remembering a Football Icon

Mike Adede passed away at Ambira Level 4 Hospital after a brave battle with pneumonia. A product of the Nairobi Olympic Youth Centre, he joined Gor Mahia FC in 1976, quickly establishing himself as a versatile and intelligent player.

Starting as a left winger, he could seamlessly transition to midfield and left-back positions, making him one of Kenya’s most adaptable and respected footballers. Off the pitch, he was admired for his urbane style and fashion sense, embodying elegance as much as excellence on the field.

A Lasting Legacy

Mike Adede’s contribution to Gor Mahia and Kenyan football transcended statistics and trophies. He inspired generations of players with his versatility, leadership, and passion. The club extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football community.

Rest in peace, Okoyeba. Your legacy will forever remain a part of the Green Army.
