Former Gor Mahia forward Francis Afriyie is in search of a new club, expressing a heartfelt desire to return to the team that etched his name into the hearts of its passionate fans.
In an exclusive chat with GorNews, the Ghanaian talented striker spoke nostalgically about his time with the club and the unwavering support he received from the K’Ogalo faithful.
“I miss Gor Mahia so much,” Afriyie shared. “The love that fans had for me is something I will always cherish. I wish one day I will come back and play again at K’Ogalo.”
Among his many memorable moments, his stunning goal against Bandari in November 2019 stands out, earning him the Kenyan Premier League Goal of the Month. The striking moment, where he gracefully danced through the opposition’s defense before delivering a curling effort, showcased his flair and talent.
Having joined Gor Mahia during the tenure of Steven George Polack, Afriyie played a crucial role in the team’s attack before departing in 2019 to join Township Rollers in Botswana, where he lifted the league trophy.
His career has since taken him across several leagues, including a stint in the Egyptian Premier League with Ghazl Mahalla, the Iraqi Premier League, and most recently, Salallah Football Club in Oman.
Reflecting on his abrupt departure from Gor Mahia, Afriyie explained that his decision was largely influenced by the club’s financial struggles at the time, making it challenging for a foreign player to remain.
“You know the club was in a bad state financially, and it was a burden to me as a foreigner to stay longer,” he noted.
He also hinted at the role of his former agent in steering his career decisions, mentioning that those experiences have prompted him to take control of his future.
“I don’t engage my career with an agent now; I am free and can decide on which club to join without any interference.”
As the current transfer window has closed, Afriyie will need to stay fit while waiting for the next opportunity to showcase his talents.
His commitment and desire to return to Gor Mahia illustrate both his love for the club and his ambition to revive his career on the pitch. As the fans await news of his next move, the prospect of seeing Afriyie in the iconic green and white jersey once more remains a hopeful possibility.
