Gor Mahia continued their resurgence in the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) by defeating Mara Sugar 2-0 in a hard-fought encounter at the Raila Odinga Stadium on Saturday.
The Millers, who have adapted well to life in the top tier, made three changes to their lineup, including handing Robert Obaga his first start.
Gor Mahia, meanwhile, stuck with the same squad that secured a midweek win against Kakamega Homeboyz, with Gad Mathews in goal and Austin Odhiambo as captain.
The opening half was evenly contested, with few clear-cut chances. Mathews was called into action in the 22nd minute to deny the hosts, while Odhiambo’s late first-half effort missed the target, leaving the teams deadlocked at halftime.
In the second half, Gor Mahia increased their intensity but struggled to break down a resolute Mara Sugar defense.
Coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno made a decisive double substitution, bringing on Gideon Bendeka and Musa Masika.

The match appeared destined for a draw until Gor Mahia’s persistence paid off in the dying moments.
Odhiambo broke the deadlock near stoppage time with a well-taken goal after combining with Ronney Onyango. Moments later, Odhiambo turned provider, setting up Bendeka to secure a 2-0 victory for the defending champions.
The win reinforces Gor Mahia’s resurgence under interim coach Otieno and gives them a glimmer of hope in their title defense.
