Twenty-time Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) champions Gor Mahia are in the spotlight not for their championship streak but for the intense competition among their goalkeepers.

Kevin Omondi has been a revelation for the defending champions this season having started in seven games, the statistics are already leaning in his favor.

Omondi’s journey from Sofapaka to Gor Mahia has been commendable, and the recent commendation from McKinstry only solidifies his position.

“Kevin now has five clean sheets this season. It’s a significant progression from his time at Sofapaka to his current position,” McKinstry expressed, showcasing his confidence in the goalkeeper.

“He’s more comfortable venturing out of his goal, which we appreciate. It allows us to press more in the attacking half, and he’s still capable of making outstanding saves,” he added, highlighting Omondi’s adaptability and skill set.

seems to have taken a new twist with the recent comments from their head coach, Johnathan McKinstry.

The anticipation around Gad Mathews’ return to the field after his injury had been building up.

Many analysts and fans alike were certain that Mathews, once fit, would reclaim his spot between the posts.

But McKinstry’s recent remarks seem to paint a different picture, indicating a competitive atmosphere within the squad.

“Everyone keeps asking about Gad Matthews. He’s back in training, but Kevin currently holds the starting position. Given his impressive performances, there’s no reason to make a change. Both Kevin and Gad will need to compete for that number one spot,” McKinstry stated, emphasizing the value of performance over past reputation.

Omondi’s career trajectory has been on the rise, especially after his transfer from Sofapaka in July. His previous stints at Wazito and Sony Sugar have played an essential role in shaping his skills and game mindset.

However, it is worth noting that Caleb Otieno, another talented goalkeeper at Gor Mahia, did get his chance to showcase his skills when he started the first league match. But his journey took a different turn as he was soon relegated to the bench.

The season ahead promises to be electrifying for Gor Mahia fans and the FKFPL at large.

With two exceptional goalkeepers, both vying for the starting position, each game will be a testament to their skills, determination, and drive to secure the net for their team.
