Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has defended their physical style of play deployed in the game against Kakamega Homeboyz, noting that his side can adapt to any tactic.

McKinstry’s side has drawn criticism from a couple of fans who claim that the brand of football they have displayed this season has not been free-flowing, with some even labeling their encounter against Ulinzi Stars three weeks ago as “boring”.

Speaking to the press after the Kakamega Homeboyz match, where K’Ogalo adapted by starting Ernest Wendo in midfield to counter Abana Beingo’s physicality, McKinstry hinted that his charges will keep adapting their playing style on a game-by-game basis in order to get as many wins as they can.

“It is always a physical game in Kakamega. Look, there are certain games around the world that you know when you go to, it is always going to be a physical encounter. In England, if you play Millwall away, you know it is going to be a tough physical encounter,” Mckinstry said.

“If you come to Kakamega, it is going to be a tough physical encounter. There is no wrong way to play football. There are many ways. You can play like Ajax or you can play like Burnley. It does not mean one is better than the other, it just means it is different.

“We know what we face here. We knew Kakamega would use their physical advantage. You saw that with their result last week against Tusker, so we knew what we were in for, it was no surprise.”

McKinstry has aimed a dig at the quality of playing surfaces in the topflight not being convenient enough for his team to set up in a way that is aesthetically pleasing.

“We said after the Ulinzi game that if teams want to have a physical encounter, we can have a physical encounter, that is no problem.

“If teams want to come and play and there is a nice surface to play on, then we will go and play, so it is about picking up the points.”

Gor Mahia will face KCB in their fifth league game of the season aiming to claim top spot, as they sit second, two points behind K’Ogalo.
