Gor Mahia’s head coach Joanath McKinstry has drawn a striking parallel between the fervent supporters of the Kenyan football club and the dedicated fans of Scottish powerhouses Rangers and Celtic.

The Irishman who has previously worked in the region, expressed his satisfaction with the Nairobi-based club and highlighted the unique intensity of Gor Mahia’s fanbase.

“Having worked in the region before, Gor is a club you can’t help but be aware of. The fanbase is very passionate and intense, and they demand success whoever the opponent,” McKinstry said in an interview with BBC.

The gaffer  went on to compare these supporters to the deeply committed fanbases of Rangers and Celtic, both of which are renowned for their strong community ties.

Gor Mahia’s passionate fan culture is deeply rooted in its heritage, originating from a union body that advocated for the welfare of a community from Western Kenya.

This strong sense of identity has been woven into the fabric of the club, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the closely knit Rangers and Celtic fan communities.

McKinstry, who joined the club in 2021,emphasizes that the prospects he presently enjoys hinge entirely upon his triumphs with Gor.

“Ultimately,” McKinstry emphasized, “Football is a winding river, with doors constantly opening and closing, and any opportunities I do have are predicated on success with Gor now.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently revoked Gor Mahia’s qualification for the upcoming continental Champions League.

Despite these setbacks, there are promising signs for the team in the new season, particularly with the retention of their rising star, Omala.

Gor Mahia kicked off the Kenyan Premier League season with a one-all draw against Sofapaka, and they clinched Kenya’s Charity Shield by defeating Kakamega Homeboyz in a penalty shootout.

McKinstry’s coaching prowess has been particularly evident in the development of Benson Omala, who emerged as the second-highest scorer in the 2022-23 league season.

Omala, a 21-year-old striker and a full Kenyan international, attributed his growth to McKinstry’s guidance, stating that the coach has “sharpened” his game.

The young striker’s exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed, as he has reportedly captured the attention of formidable South African clubs, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
